Collaboration between the government, State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), and the private sector in healthcare is crucial for strengthening the national healthcare system and the economy.
This was the key takeaway from the BNI Investor Daily Summit 2024, particularly Plenary Session 4 on "Balancing Act: How Indonesia's Economy Must Maximize SOEs & The Private Sector," held on October 9, 2024, at the Plenary Hall, JCC Senayan.
The panel featured Krestijanto Pandji, President Director of PT Medela Potentia; Professor Telisa Aulia Falianty, Economist from the University of Indonesia; and former Deputy Speaker of the House, Fahri Hamzah. The session was moderated by Rio Abdurrahman, CEO of B-Universe.
Professor Telisa stressed the critical role of collaboration between SOEs and the private sector in economic growth, particularly in healthcare. “Collaboration is key in sectors such as digitalization, renewable energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and healthcare,” she noted.
Collaboration in healthcare can focus on producing medical devices locally, utilizing Indonesia’s biodiversity for pharmaceuticals, developing raw materials, and distributing internationally standardized pharmaceutical products across Indonesia.
Indonesia produces 90% of its pharmaceuticals locally, but it still depends heavily on imported medical devices. The Central Bureau of Statistics recorded medical device imports totaling US$1.48 billion in 2022. According to Indonesia Central Bureau of Statistics, medical device imports reached US$1.48 billion in 2022.
To reduce this dependency, continuous innovation, research, and investment are needed. This will strengthen the medical device and pharmaceutical industries and ensure distribution reaches all regions in Indonesia.
“There is a big opportunity for the government, SOEs, private sector, and MSMEs to invest in medical devices and pharmaceuticals,” said Krestijanto Pandji.
In addition to reducing import reliance, Indonesia faces challenges in distributing healthcare products. Effective distribution is critical to ensuring healthcare access across the country’s vast geography. Strong collaboration will maintain the quality of healthcare services and stabilize the pharmaceutical supply chain.
“Distribution is essential. At PT Medela Potentia through AAM, we cover not only major cities but also remote areas from Aceh to Jayapura. We follow strict standards to ensure medicines are delivered in good condition, maintaining their efficacy and safety,” emphasized Krestijanto.
"I believe that by working together, we can achieve healthcare independence," he concluded.
PT Medela Potentia, through its subsidiary PT Deca Metric Medica (DMM), also contributes by producing sterile and non-sterile wound dressings and surgical supplies. The DMM facility was inaugurated by the Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, on December 21, 2023, at the Jababeka Industrial Area.
